This March, director Sam Raimi will be whisking us back to the Land of Oz with Oz: The Great And Powerful, a prequel to the 1939 musical The Wizard Of Oz. While we wait to touch down on the Yellow Brick Road, a newly-released featurette has offered a few tantalising glimpses at some of the film’s spectacular costume designs.
“We started very specifically with each of the witches,” explains costume designer Gary Jones, who previously won an Oscar for his work on The Talented Mr Ripley. Starting with the witches was quite a task, considering Oz contains three spell-casters in the form of Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), all of whom have their own unique looks. With the next Summer Olympic Games set to officially start in a matter of days, a mixture of excitement, concern, controversy, and joy is fuelling a bubbling atmosphere in the event’s host city, London. Today we are going to take a look back at prior Olympic Games hosted by the British capital in 1908 and 1948. Specifically, we will be focusing on unusual, controversial and undesired incidents that should not be repeated in 2012.
A Volcanic Eruption, 1906
No, this didn’t occur in London, this type of tectonic activity just doesn’t happen in the UK. But, it did happen in the Gulf of Naples in 1906. At the beginning of April that year Mount Vesuvius erupted. It produced a lava fountain three kilometeres high and severely damaged the nearby city of Naples, resulting in the death of over 200 people.
How is this related to the London Olympics? The bid for the 1908 Games was won by Rome over competitors Berlin, London and Milan at the 6th International Olympic Committee session in 1904. Two years later, the above national emergency occurred and the Italian government was forced to cancel the Olympic Games so additional funds could be re-directed to Naples for damage repair. London inherited the responsibility of hosting the Olympics soon-thereafter which meant the city had just two years to prepare for it. Obviously, there is an extremely small chance of a volcanic eruption occurring in London over the next few weeks, so we can rule this out as a repeated incident. Phew!

It’s possibly one of the most talked about, in demand sequels ever to be proposed and we’re still all wondering if it will actually happen. 23 years of waiting and anticipation has done little to quell the enthusiasm for the Ghostbusters franchise for most of us but it seems at least one person has a different opinion.
