The first official shot of Paul Giamatti as super-villain Rhino has been unveiled by Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Though an earlier, grainer pic gave us an initial glimpse at the character, Webb tweeted the official image of a somewhat angry-looking Giamatti direct from the film’s set. It confirms that the look of the character is somewhat different to what fans know from the comics – in the pages of Marvel, the Rhino wore a grey super-suit that came with a matching horn helmet.

This movie version of the character goes for a more realistic approach (as has been the calling card for Webb’s Spidey films). Instead of a body-suit and horns, this Rhino – real name Aleksei Sytsevich – favours a sports jacket and tattoos. He’s a Russian bad guy who’ll be making life miserable for Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield).

Rhino isn’t the only villain in this superhero sequel, though. Spidey will also be going up against Electro (Jamie Foxx), a character from the comics who is able to control electricity after he is struck by lightning. Electro first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 in February 1964 and has made appearances in various animated Spider-Man series. This will be his big screen debut.

Shots of Foxx decked out in blue make-up first went online in April 2013 and showed a mid-transformation Electro. As with Rhino, the look differs from what fans know, the costume ditching the green and yellow colour scheme favoured by Electro in the comics.

Foxx himself noted the changes earlier this year when he told Black Film that the film’s producers “want something for the future. They want to have it more grounded and not as comic bookie, so it won’t be green and yellow.”

Images off Foxx pre-transformation have also been revealed online, with the actor sporting typical ‘unfashionable’ genius wear like plaid trousers, brown jacket and white socks. Plus those all-important specs, just so we know he really is a genius. On top of that, he has his very own movie wig in the form of a somewhat unflattering comb-over.

Back in February, we were given our first look at Peter Parker’s new Spider-Man suit, which featured bigger eyes and was a lighter shade of blue. Spidey will also be getting a pair of “gnarly” new web-shooters according to Webb. The new suit seems to be a conscious attempt to recreate the Spider-Man look created by Mark Bagley for the comic series Ultimate Spider-Man.

Set around Peter Parker’s high school graduation, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees Parker’s life getting even more complicated as he contends with his stormy romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), plus the reappearance of old friend Harry Osborne (Dane DeHaan). As Peter begins to uncover more clues about his past – and his parents – another young woman enters the frame in the form of Mary-Jane (Shailene Woodley). We sense trouble ahead…

Did you know that Matthew McConaughey hails from a little place called Texas? If his unmistakable southern drawl wasn’t clue enough, his obsession with cowboy hats probably tipped you off.

It’s surely no coincidence that McConaughey’s sudden career renaissance circa 2010 (after years of service in dreadful rom-coms) coincided with his discovery of hats. Though McConaughey doesn’t don one in this week’s Mud, that’s merely a rare blip in his headware romance. Gandalf has his staff. McConaughey has hit hats. And boy does he love them…

Killer Joe (2010)

McConaughey plays the darker-than-dark gun-for-hire in this southern fried thriller from director William Friedkin, which of course means he favours a pitch-black cowboy hat.

It’s as black as Joe’s soul.

Magic Mike (2012)

If you can tear your eyes away from that gut-rumbling six pack, you’ll notice McConaughey’s wearing a hat again in Steven Soderbergh’s stripper dramedy.

It’s just the finishing touch in a cowboy ensemble that puts the ‘eeeee!’ in ‘yeee-haaaa!’ as McConaughey plays ex-stripper Dallas. And though he obviously loves the hats, the actor admits he actually kept the thongs from his outfit after the shoot.

“‘I kept all mine,” he says. “As soon as we found the leather pants on the first day with Christopher, the costume designer, we were like, ‘Okay, that’s Dallas’s staple.’”

Bernie (2011)

McConaughey goes full southern in this true-life drama, pairing a creamy Stetson with some impressively-large seventies specs.

He plays a district attorney, which explains why he’s also teamed his cowboy hat with a suit and tie. Only McConaughey could pull a combo like that off without looking like a swindling car dealer.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

No, your eyes don’t deceive you, that is indeed Matthew McConaughey looking distinctly NOT like Matthew McConaughey. He lost 38lbs to play a man who is diagnosed with HIV in this upcoming drama.

“Your organs [and] muscles shrink, your organs shrink [and] my stomach has shrunk as well,” McConaughey told HitFix of the shocking weight loss. “So, as much as I can’t wait to have that cheeseburger on the day [shooting ends] it’ll probably be damn hard to eat the whole thing.

“When that day comes, and it’s coming, I don’t want to be doing this interview at a Pizza Hut buffet, you know? I choose to pick my places where there’s less good smells and temptations, you know? That’s really nice.”

Home turf

Sure the detailing’s girly as a Barbie doll, but McConaughey pulls it off effortlessly. That’s just how he rolls.

A selection of the dazzling, ’20s-inspired costumes worn by the likes of Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming The Great Gatsby is to go on show in New York. Created by Miuccia Prada, the dizzying array of speakeasy-style dresses created for the film will be exhibited in Prada’s Soho store in New York before the costume pieces are moved to the fashion label’s Tokyo stores.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular character, a rich aristocrat who’s famous for his opulent parties. He becomes an acquaintance of Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire), an aspiring stock broker who discovers that Gatsby had an affair with Daisy (Carey Mulligan), Nick’s cousin.

Gatsby is renowned for his flamboyant lifestyle, which makes him the perfect subject for Baz Luhrmann, the Aussie director behind sumptuous motion pictures Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. With The Great Gatsby, the director has taken the glamour to a whole new level with a little help from his costume designer wife Catherine Martin. Together with Prada, a friend of Luhrmann’s, and the Brooks Brothers, Martin helped recreate the roaring twenties in all its fashion glory.

One of the central pieces for the film was the ‘chandelier dress’ (below), which was part of the Prada spring 2010 collection. Martin selected this glittering creation for Daisy’s eye-catching party frock, which has already been splashed all over the film’s publicity, from its eye-popping trailer to the numerous posters and stills.

On top of that, fashion label the Brooks Brothers (which was name-checked in Fitzgerald’s novel) created 1,700 items of clothing for The Great Gatsby, mostly dressing the male characters – and among them DiCaprio’s Gatsby himself. To tie in with the movie, the Brooks Brothers has unveiled its very own Gatsby Collection, a limited edition range that includes the striking black bow tie and white tipping that DiCaprio wears in the film’s poster.

Meanwhile, Miuccia Prada created 40 different looks for The Great Gatsby, using her own ’20s-style back catalogue as a launching pad for the numerous party dresses. She wasn’t beholden to the real fashion of that time period, though, telling The Telegraph: “The reality is that from 1920, I could find a photo or a fashion illustration that would support almost any choice that we’ve made in the film. But we are not making a documentary. We are trying to express a story in a way in which Fitzgerald’s visceral modernity is able to transgress the plane of the screen.”

Prada was also inspired by the fact that Luhrmann created a character name and biography for every single extra who appeared in the film. “It was about working for a character, not about just doing clothes,” notes Martin.

The film’s luxurious costumes are set to reignite ’20s fashion in the real world, with labels including Unique Vintage releasing a Gatsby-inspired collection that includes head-beaded slapper dresses, purses, shoes and other ’20s-style accessories.

Meanwhile, US bridal store David’s Bridal expects the ’20s revival to hit wedding ceremonies, too. Its Melissa Sweet Collection will include a stunning cap sleeve fit-and-flare lace gown.

The Great Gatsby opens in UK cinemas on 16 May.

Ben Stiller – Dodgeball (2004)

The Actor: Hollywood funnyman with a penchant for playing angry little men.

The Fat: What happens when a gym bunny loses the biggest dodgeball game of his career? If he’s White Goodman (Stiller), he reverts to his former state of blubberiness, chowing down on deep-fried chicken.

There’s apparently a Dodgeball sequel in the works, but the question remains – will Stiller put on the fat suit again? We sort of hope he does…

Inspirational Words: “C’mon down and join the winning team, because here at Globo Gym, we’re better than you, and we know it!”

Gwyneth Paltrow – Shallow Hal (2001)

The Actor: Twig-thin Gwynnie is known for her angelic adherence to everything healthy and nutritious. She’s probably never heard of a Twix. Which makes her transformation in this Farrelly Brothers chuckler all the more shocking.

The Fat: It took make-up artists four hours a go to transform Gwynnie into tidal-wave-making pool-splasher Rosemary. Needless to say, the actress was glad when the shoot was over.

“The fat suit was profoundly uncomfortable!” she says. “And suffocating, because they basically crazy glue it to your face.”

Inspirational Words: “I know what I am and I know what I’m not. I’m the girl who, you know, gets really good grades and who’s not afraid to be funny. And I’m the girl who has a lot of friends who are boys and no boyfriends.”

Mike Myers – Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

The Actor: Comedy chameleon who’s played everything from rock-loving Wayne (Wayne’s World) to bad-breathed ogre (Shrek).

The Fat: Want to know just how fat this spoof’s Fat Bastard is? Well, the fat suit Myers wore weighed a whopping 100lbs and took seven hours to put on. It took only three (!) to remove.

Myers himself described the process as like flying to Europe and waking up as a 500lb Scotsman…

Inspirational Words: “Of course I’m not happy! Look at me; I’m a big fat slob. I’ve got bigger titties than you do. I’ve got more chins than a Chinese phonebook. I’ve not seen my willie in two years, which is long enough to declare it legally dead.”

Eddie Murphy – The Nutty Professor (1996)

The Actor: Hit the big time with 1984′s Beverly Hills Cop, which unleashed his singularly chatty brand of comedy on the world.

The Fat: Murphy loved wearing the fat suit as Kletus in The Nutty Professor so much that he donned it again in the second Nutty Professor movie (The Klumps) as well as Norbit.

“Right now, I am one of the leading fat-suit actors in Hollywood,” he says. “I think everybody agrees that I’m funniest when I’m in a fat suit.”

Inspirational Words: “Sometimes when you want something so, so bad, you’ll do just about anything to get it. But I learned one thing from Buddy. Life isn’t about being happy with how much you weigh, but just being happy with yourself.”

Sharon Stone – Alpha Dog (2006)

The Actor: Best known as the devious author in Basic Instinct, and for kicking Arnie’s behind in Total Recall.

The Fat: Stone piled on the prosthetic pounds in this earnest drama to play a grieving mother. To be honest, she still looks pretty foxy.

Director Nick Cassavetes agrees. “When I was testing fat suits on Sharon, you put 40 pounds on her [and] she still looks like a glamourpuss,” he said. “We had to really go and put it on her. She liked it. She feels a certain comfort with all that stuff on her.”

Inspirational Words: “When my son died, I died. They say there’s a reason for everything. Well if God’s got a purpose for me, he better get the f**k down here and tell me what it is.”

(OK, she doesn’t actually say anything inspirational – she’s still pretty cut up over the death of her son…)

True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård is the latest actor to be linked to the long-in-gestation new movie version of The Crow. The Swedish actor, who plays vampire Eric on the raunchy HBO series, is currently the frontrunner for the role of Eric Draven in the comic-book fantasy, a man who returns from the dead to avenge the murder of his fiancée.

The Crow first made the leap to the big screen from the pages of James O’Barr’s 1989 comic book in 1994. Directed by Alex Proyas, that version of The Crow starred Brandon Lee, who infamously died on set when a prop gun was accidentally replaced with a real firearm. As in the comics, Lee’s goth-punk costume consisted of tight leather and black-and-white face paint.

The face make-up was based on a combination of the looks of rockers Ian Curtis (Joy Division) and Daniel Ash (Bauhaus), while Iggy Pop provided inspiration for Eric’s sculpted torso and the character’s general personality. Iggy Pop was even lined up to appear in the film as Funboy, but scheduling conflicts got in the way.

A remake of director Alex Proyas’ 1994 film has been in the pipeline since 2008, when Blade helmer Stephen Norrington announced that he would be presiding over a “reinvention”. He told Variety that he wanted to update the Crow formula, stating: “Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style.”

Though Norrington later walked away from the project, Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) was an early contender for the role. In fact, he came so close to playing Eric Draven that artwork of his proposed costume was created, and later released online. Check the artwork out below.

The artwork definitely reflects Norrington’s desire to “reinvent” The Crow, and takes a more subtle approach to Draven’s look. The white face-paint and black eye-shadow is less severe than the make-up sported by Brandon Lee back in ’94. It also looks like the concept artist was playing around with giving Draven a Mohawk, and/or a hat.

Not long after this artwork was released, though, Bradley Cooper also dropped out of the film’s production when it conflicted with his plan to make Paradise Lost with Alex Proyas. It remains to be seen if the artwork has been scrapped entirely, or if it will be recycled when Skarsgård potentially steps into the role.

Skarsgård is just the latest in a long list of contenders for the role. Previously, Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Gosling and even James McAvoy were in line for the role. Most recently, Tom Hiddleston was being touted as a potential new Crow. He reportedly met with the film’s producers and even sent them a make-up test that he had shot himself in London.

The Wrap reported that Hiddleston will be undergoing a proper make-up test soon, which conflicts with reports that Skarsgård is ready to step into the leather body-suit.

Obviously, Draven’s look is key to the film and newly-signed director F. Javier Gutierrez will want to be sure he’s cast the right guy for the role. We imagine that will involve quite a few more make-up tests…

In the nineties, Tom Selleck single-handedly revived the popularity of the moustache with his imminently fashionable face fuzz (when he shaved it off, people stopped recognising him in the streets).

Nowadays, moustaches have mostly been consigned to seasonal charity fads (movember…) and, yes, the movies. This month, it’s Jack Black getting in on the handlebar action with Bernie (out now), in which he plays a Gospel-singing mortician. But he’s not the first to grow out a whiskery lip-hugger in the name of art…

Emperor Ming – Flash Gordon (1980)

You’re the ruler of an empire. You have power beyond comprehension. And you’re bald as a coot. Sometimes, all it takes to instil fear and love in your followers is a little bit of facial hair.

Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) certainly understands that, having groomed his moustache into a formidable festival of fuzz. By all accounts, it was the least troublesome aspect of von Sydow’s costume – the rest of it weighed a massive 70lbs. Merciless.

Ron Burgundy – Anchorman (2004)

Now here’s a guy who knows how to groom. Crisp white shirt. Manicured eyebrows. A glossy mane to make all other news anchors weep. And, of course, that beautifully-cultivated moustache, which gives Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) the credibility that every news anchor desperately needs.

Only Ben Stiller’s rival newsie Arturo Mendes comes close to matching him in the moustache stakes. But Burgundy looks so good he’s got the entire team (and us) in air-jumping mode…

Doc Holliday – Tombstone (1993)

Understated. Simple. Elegant. Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) gets it so, so right when it comes to his moustache. He even balances it out with a little bit of lower-lip fuzz, just so the rest of his face doesn’t feel left out.

Of course, Holliday’s a class act from head to toe. Dressed up as a fine example of an upstanding Western gent, he works the cravat, the double-breasted waistcoat and the fedora to his favour. He’s got style, he’s got grace; he’s got something on his face.

Captain Hook – Hook (1991)

Fashioned, quite purposefully, into two little hooks, the facial hair of this sea-faring meanie is an integral part of his character. Stripping Hook (Dustin Hoffman) of his hook-like handlebar ‘tache would be like depriving him of his curly Musketeer wig.

Considering his standing as ruler of all pirates, Hook’s clearly got the best help money can buy, which explains why he’s as well groomed a he is. Just check out the matching double-hook eyebrows, which almost form a second moustache. Our minds are blown.

Inspector Clouseau – The Return Of The Pink Panther (1975)

Of course, no moustache list would be complete without a singularly bumbling French inspector by the name of Clouseau (Peter Sellers). Championing a neat little face slug, Clouseau may be clueless when it comes to solving crimes, but he certainly knows what he’s doing with his facial hair.

Still, as well-groomed as it is, his moustache’s still not quite as impressive as this guy’s. What a dude…

If you’re only following one person on Twitter these days, that person should be Bryan Singer. The X-Men director only joined the social networking website late last year, but he’s kicking up a storm of news exclusives by revealing behind the scenes info on his latest film, the currently-shooting X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

The director’s latest reveal is a glimpse at the chairs of his cast on set (along with the comment ‘Every mutant needs a place to sit’). The chairs all feature the names of characters in the film. Among the expected names – Logan, Xavier, Storm, Magneto, Kitty Pryde – there’s also the surprise presence of new characters Bishop and James ‘Warpath’ Proudstar.

Neither characters have appeared in any of the previous X-Men films, meaning we should expect them to make their debut in Days Of Future Past. Warpath is a Native American who’s both super-fast and super-strong, while Bishop has the ability to time travel.

In the comics, Warpath is portrayed as a mutant with massive muscles. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger crossed with Bane. He first appeared in New Mutants #16 in June 1984, and though the minutiae of his costume (colours, fabrics) have changed throughout the years, his most recent incarnation in X-Men: Regenesis has him in a tight-fitting red and black X-Men suit.

His outfit also consists of a red eye-mask, wrist braces and a huge knife.

Meanwhile, Bishop is an African-American anti-hero whose defining costume feature is a red neckerchief (though that occasionally becomes a red cape in the comics). In the current comic book run, his right arm is an enlargened, nuclear-powered prosthetic that he stole from Forge. It remains to be seen if he’ll retain that feature in Days Of Future Past.

Though we’ve yet to get a look at the movie incarnations of Warpath and Bishop, Singer has revealed Halle Berry in her new costume as Storm. It’s a change-up from her costume in previous X-Men films, with a noticeably less shiny sheen to the fabric – and the addition of wing-like under-arm fabric.

It’s a more military look for the character, with Berry also sporting shorter hair than she has previously – though she’s still stopped short of going for the full-on Mohawk that her character has in the comics.

As well as showing us Storm’s new look, Singer has also tweeted an image of Nicholas Hoult in make-up as blue-furred Beast. The shot revealed that the prosthetics had been subtly tweaked after Beast’s appearance in X-Men: First Class, with the new look a little less beastly and a little more human. This version doesn’t hide Hoult’s features quite as much, which presumably will help him emote more as the furry mutant.

Somebody else slipping back into blue is Jennifer Lawrence as shape-shifter Mystique. This time around, though, she’ll be wearing a bodysuit instead of being slathered in blue paint. “I’m so excited because I’m going to wear a body suit,” the actress told E! in March 2013. “It will be from neck down so it will cut out time and the blisters.”

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be released in cinemas on 17 July 2014.

Question: what’s your favourite scary TV show? Back in the nineties, the answer was probably The X-Files or Twin Peaks. Next year, you may have to change that answer to Scream, because the post-modern slasher movie series – which championed that quotable catchphrase, ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’ – is making its way to the small screen.

MTV has commissioned a pilot episode for a Scream TV show just a year after rumours of the spin-off series first hit the internet. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Dimension Films, the studio behind the Scream movies, will co-produce the pilot episode with MTV, and is currently on the hunt for writers.

Fans of the films should find comfort in the fact that director Wes Craven, who helmed all four of the Scream films, is currently in talks to direct the pilot episode. It would be the first time Craven has shot anything specifically for the small screen in more than two decades, having previously directed an episode of Nightmare Café back in 1992.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps for the Scream pilot, we know that it will be an hour-long episode. And while creating a pilot is no guarantee that the Scream series itself will be greenlit, MTV has tentatively pencilled in summer 2014 for a series launch, should the pilot be a success.

The other thing we know: it’s safe to assume that the TV series will include the film franchise’s most famous character, serial killer Ghostface. First glimpsed in the 1996 original film gutting a blonde-haired Drew Barrymore, the Ghostface costume worn by the film’s killers became emblematic of Scream – a pale white mask stretched into a mournful expression that recalled Edvard Munch’s Expressionist painting The Scream (not to mention Pink Floyd’s The Wall album cover).

The costume was originally created in 1991 as a Halloween costume by Fun World worker Brigitte Sleiertin. It was known as ‘The Peanut-Eyed Ghost’ for obvious reasons, though the costume was later branded ‘GhostFace’ by Fun World Licensing Director RJ Torbert. During Craven’s search for the perfect outfit for the first Scream film, his producer Marianne Maddalena stumbled somewhat prophetically across the costume in a house while on a location shoot, and took it to Craven.

Ghostface returned three more times on the big screen, hunting everybody from Jada Pinkett-Smith and Sarah Michelle Gellar to Anna Paquin – and, of course, series regulars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. While none of those are likely to return for another scream, we wouldn’t rule out a cameo appearance by Campbell, who may be tempted to pass the torch on to the next generation.

The previous Scream film, Scream 4, was released in 2011 to mixed acclaim. Though it was marketed as a reboot of the franchise, it ended up being a clever epilogue to the original trilogy that tore reboots apart just as the original films lampooned other slasher tropes. Film fans clamoured for a fifth film, but that now seems even more unlikely given the buzz surrounding a TV series. Welcome back, Ghostface.

Who’d have thought an accessory that serves a totally functional purpose – um, shading your eyes from the sun – could turn out to be so damn cool? It’s one of the golden rules of filmmaking: you want to make your characters look awesome? Film them in slow-mo and shove them in a pair of sunnies. It certainly worked for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, as well as this bedazzling bunch…

Al Pacino – Scarface (1983)

Tony Montana (Pacino) came from nothing and built an empire from the ground up. Think Alan Sugar, except replace Sugar’s Amstrad domain with something altogether shadier. A sign that Montana had finally made it? His wardrobe went from dodgy Hawaiian prints to that now iconic (and blinding) white suit paired with a blood red shirt.

Most important by far in the Mafiosa’s ensemble, though, are the Linda Farrow shades – big, chunky Aviators that tell us Montana’s not afraid of making a bold fashion statement. Just don’t make him angry…

Tom Cruise – Top Gun (1986)

Has any movie star made sunglasses cooler? Tom Cruise broke out a mean pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers in 1983’s Risky Business, even donning them on the film’s poster to heart-stopping effect. And he’s still at it this year with sci-fi Oblivion.

It was the Cruisester’s turn in greased-up, high-flying pilot thriller Top Gun where he found the perfect pair of specs, though. Wearing (what else?) these killer Aviators, Cruise outshines co-star Val Kilmer, pairing his sunglasses with a bomber jacket, a motorbike and a jawline that could cut glass.

Audrey Hepburn – Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)

Though the image of Audrey Hepburn daintily clutching an over-sized cigarette holder became this romantic comedy’s most iconic, the actress’s black Wayfarer-style Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses were just as vital in turning her into a style icon.

Known as ‘Manhattan’ glasses, the Goldsmith shades are large and bulky, perfectly complementing Hepburn’s dainty features and giving her that hint of hard edge that her character Holly Golightly required. Of course, Holly often merely peered over the rim of her Manhattans in order to appear mysterious…

Keanu Reeves – The Matrix (1999)

Carrie-Anne Moss wore an eye-catching pair of Aviators as kick-ass babe Trinity, but it was Keanu Reeves’ transformation from office-cubicle nerd to leather-wearing badass that really made us swoon.

Sporting a pair of custom-made Blinde shades (each cast member had their own special-made pair), Reeves is nothing short of riveting as the modern-day Messiah. Just imagine what Jesus would’ve accomplished if he’d had a pair of shades.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – The Terminator (1984)

He’s big. He’s brutal. And he means business. But that doesn’t mean that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s robotic future assassin can’t look cool, which is probably why he dons this pair of Gargoyle shades when he heads back to the 1980s to take down Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton).

Much has been made of the Terminator’s decision to wear sunnies – so much, in fact, that an entire Wiki page has been created to explain the robot’s strange sartorial leanings.

He doesn’t always get it right, of course – the shades the T-800 picks up in Terminator 3 aren’t quite so successful…

Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi – The Blues Brothers (1980)

Small wonder the eponymous brothers frequently don sunglasses in this jazzy number – the star wattage of its cast list is genuinely formidable. Ray Charles. Aretha Franklin. Steve Cropper. Talk about blinding.

It was another music icon that the brothers borrowed their look from, though, having been inspired by the suit-n-sunnies combos championed by blues star John Lee Hooker. Lookin’ good guys…

Jean Reno – Leon The Professional (1994)

It’s entirely possible that hired-killer Leon (Reno) isn’t aware just how cool these vintage specs are. After all, he has far more pressing things to think about. Like his latest hit. Or young charge Mathilda (Natalie Portman).

Still, he looks hellacool in these couture Jean Paul Gaultier sunnies, picked up – no doubt – on the way to one of his jobs. Or perhaps harvested from a particularly fashionable target…

Charlize Theron – Young Adult (2011)

Book writer Mavis Gary (Theron) isn’t exactly happy with her life, which is why she wakes up most mornings with the kind of head-splitting hangover that normally only comes the day after a family member’s wedding – or a massive high school house party.

That’s why she favours this pair of Christian Dior Zemire shades – the harsh light of day is just too harsh for this self-loathing ice queen. Especially after a huge bender.

George Carlin – Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

A totally righteous dude, Rufus (Carlin) is, of course, the time-travelling messiah sent back to the 1980s in order to help Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) set the world to rights.

And naturally, any friend of Bill and Ted is up on fashion, meaning Rufus comes with his very own set of futuristic shades.

He also teaches the eponymous duo their most valuable lesson…

Tilda Swinton – I Am Love (2009)

The gorgeous Milan landscapes are enough to steal your breath away in this sumptuous Italian melodrama – no wonder Swinton dons a pair of shades to safeguard against the dazzling sights.

Rocking a pair of Salvatore Ferragamos, she’s every bit the Italian style icon. And those sunnies will come in handy when things go wrong for her character – nothing puts a brave face on tragedy like a pair of sunglasses.
